Ok, Let me get nostalgic on you real quick cause truly, this era (tbh from ‘94 onwards) of Neptune’s production never fails to put me in my feelings. Woy! (Plus I do love a cowbell…🔔)
So none of us escaped early 00s fashion (although I still dressed in a lot of car boot sale vintage finds that some would find shocking, I was happy expressing myself in what felt good!) but 702 could pull anything off, right?
Anyway, I want to tell you another story about this year…it’s about love and sustainability and what I know for sure
In 2003 I was filled with hope about changing the world. I was 23. Going on anti war marches, community gatherings exploring more layers of what it means to be actively anti-racist, and how that has everything to do with everything, like environmentalism for example, and i was meeting with fellow activists and using my voice to speak up about what I believed in.
It was scary to speak up (still is) but what I know for sure 16 years later is living and speaking your truth with integrity -even though you might be scared- feels easier than denying it. That’s not to say it’s an easy path of course! But an honest one.
16 years on, what I do know for sure is that this stuff I speak of, that is, activism and healing, seeking joy and pleasure amidst and in spite of darkness, doing you, living sustainably, and more, has everything to do with love. That in order to do this work we must practice the art of nourishing ourselves and each other. Cause we need each other.
Prioritising taking care of myself (especially in the realm of rest and time off) has always been a challenging concept for me to swallow, and I’m still working on it (anyone else?🥴), but over the years, thanks to the help of ancestors, thinkers, activists, artists and beings that came before us, the layers peel away and i recognise my truth needs to centre love, pleasure and nourishment in order for me to do the work I’m here to do. That THIS is part of the work of changing the world for the better.
